Zebrano | exotic wood
Zebrano, also known as zebrawood, is a tropical hardwood that is mainly found in West Africa, particularly in Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and is known for its striking, striped grain, which is reminiscent of a zebra's coat. Due to its striking appearance, Zebrano is often used for decorative purposes, particularly in high-end furniture and luxury wood projects.
Color & grain
- Heartwood: The heartwood has a golden brown to dark brown base color with pronounced dark stripes that can range from dark brown to almost black. These stripes are usually parallel, but can also be wavy or irregular, giving the wood a unique look.
- Sapwood: The sapwood is light yellow in color and clearly separated from the darker heartwood, but is rarely used.
- Grain: Zebrano has a striking, often straight grain with distinctive striped patterns. In some cases, the grain can be wavy or warped, giving the wood an even more vibrant look. The texture is rather coarse, but even.
Tree size & wood properties
- Average height: 30-40 meters
- Trunk diameter: 60-90 cm
- Hardness: Janka hardness: ~8,150 N Zebrano is a very hard wood with a high density, which makes it resistant and durable.
- Weight: Medium to high density, approx. 800-900 kg/m³ in the dried state.
- Durability: Zebrano is moderately to well resistant to pests and moisture due to its dense structure and natural oils. However, it can be sensitive to the effects of weathering without appropriate surface treatment.
Frequent uses
- Furniture: Zebrano is often used for luxurious pieces of furniture, especially for tables, cabinets and shelves. The striking grain gives the furniture a modern and exotic look.
- Veneers: Due to its decorative appearance, Zebrano is often used as veneer wood, e.g. for fine interior fittings, exclusive wall paneling or high-quality surface finishes.
- Interior fittings: In luxurious interiors, Zebrano is used for wall panels, stair treads, door panels or floor coverings.
- Musical instruments: Due to its unique appearance and acoustic properties, Zebrano is sometimes used to make guitars and other stringed instruments.
