American Walnut | Black Walnut
American walnut, also known as black walnut, is a high-quality hardwood that is valued for its deep brown color and excellent workability. It has a fine to medium grain, which is usually straight, but can also have wavy or ridged structures. The smooth texture and natural sheen give the wood an elegant appearance.
Color & grain
- Heartwood: Ranges from deep chocolate brown to violet or reddish-brown tones. Darkens over time when exposed to light.
- Sapwood: Light grey to creamy white, often steam-treated to better match the color of the heartwood.
- Grain: Mostly straight, but can also have pronounced structures such as a figured, burl or root wood pattern, which makes it particularly desirable for decorative applications.
Tree size & wood properties
- Average height: 30-40 meters
- Trunk diameter: 60-120 cm
- Hardness: Janka hardness: ~ 4,490 N – softer than oak or maple, but still durable.
- Weight: Average density, approx. 640 kg/m³ in the dried state.
- Durability: Naturally resistant to rot and pests, but somewhat susceptible to bruising due to its medium hardness.
Frequent uses
- Furniture: High-quality cupboards, chopping boards, tables, beds and chests of drawers due to their elegant appearance and good workability.
- Veneers & luxury interior fittings: Particularly in demand for exclusive wall paneling, automotive interiors and designer pieces.
- Rifle stocks: Highly valued for hunting and sporting rifles because of their strength and beautiful grain.
