Ash | Ash wood
Ash wood is a durable, resilient and versatile hardwood known for its light color and distinctive grain. It has a medium to coarse texture with a mostly straight grain. Due to its excellent bending strength and toughness, it is often used for load-bearing constructions.
Color & grain
- Heartwood: Light brown to slightly reddish, darkens slightly over time.
- Sapwood: Very light, almost whitish, often not clearly separated from the heartwood.
- Grain: Straight to slightly wavy, with an even and open structure that gives the wood a decorative appearance.
Tree size & wood properties
- Average height: 25-35 meters
- Trunk diameter: 50-100 cm
- Hardness: Janka hardness: ~6,600 N Ash is therefore considered a medium-hard to hard wood
- Weight: Average density, approx. 670 kg/m³ in the dried state.
- Durability: Less resistant to rot and insect infestation, therefore not suitable for outdoor use.
Frequent uses
- Furniture: Chairs, tables, cupboards and beds because of the attractive grain and strength.
- Sports equipment: Baseball bats, bow shafts, gymnastics equipment and tool handles due to the high elasticity and impact resistance.
- Floors & stairs: Ash wood is often used for parquet flooring and stair treads as it is durable and visually appealing.
- Instrument making: Particularly popular for guitar necks and drumsticks, as it is light but stable.
- Vehicle construction & tool handles: Used in carriages, wagon wheels and axe handles due to its high bending and tensile strength.
