Oak | Oak wood

Oak wood is one of the most popular and durable hardwoods, valued for its high strength, natural resilience and characteristic grain. It has a medium to coarse texture and a pronounced, mostly straight grain with distinct pores. Thanks to its hardness and durability, it is used both indoors and outdoors.

Color & grain

  • Heartwood: Ranges from light golden brown to deep, warm brown, can vary depending on the oak species.
  • Sapwood: Lighter, often creamy white to yellowish.
  • Grain: Straight, often with distinctive growth rings and large pores that give the wood a rustic look.

Tree size & wood properties

  • Average height: 20-40 meters
  • Trunk diameter: 60-150 cm
  • Hardness: Janka hardness: ~6500 N This means that oak is considered a medium-hard to hard wood
  • Weight: High density, approx. 700-770 kg/m³ in the dried state.
  • Durability: White oak is particularly resistant to moisture and rot, as its pores are sealed with tyloses. Red oak is less resistant to weathering.

Frequent uses

  • Furniture: High-quality cupboards, dining tables, chopping boards, beds and solid wood furniture due to its robustness.
  • Floors & stairs: Perfect for parquet floors and stair treads as it is extremely resistant to wear and tear.
  • Barrel production: White oak is traditionally used for whisky, wine and cognac barrels, as it does not allow liquid to pass through and releases aromas well.
  • Boat & bridge building: White oak in particular is used because of its high water resistance.
  • Doors & window frames: Very popular for durable constructions.
  • Carvings & decorative applications: Often used for inlays and decorations due to its beautiful grain.
