Ovangkol

Ovangkol Grain
Origin: Africa

Ovangkol | Amazakoue

Ovangkol is a tropical hardwood that originates from West Africa and is particularly valued for its attractive appearance and high resistance. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and is closely related to species such as Bubinga and Wenge.

Color & grain

  • Heartwood: The color of the heartwood varies from golden brown to medium brown, with a reddish or purplish tinge. Ovangkol can also have a unique, lighter striped pattern.
  • Sapwood: Lighter and often yellowish or gray-green, but usually not used for processing as it is distinguished from the darkness of the heartwood.
  • Grain: The grain of ovangkol is usually straight to slightly wavy, but can also have interesting patterns such as “snake grain” or “flaming”. These striking patterns make the wood particularly attractive for decorative purposes.

Tree size & wood properties

  • Average height: 30-40 meters
  • Trunk diameter: 80-150 cm
  • Hardness: Janka hardness: ~ 8,270 N relatively hard and resistant, which makes it suitable for both furniture and heavy-duty applications.
  • Weight: Medium to high density, approx. 700-800 kg/m³ inthe dried state.
  • Durability: Ovangkol is highly resistant to moisture, insect infestation and rot, making it ideal for indoor use and occasionally for outdoor use (with appropriate care).

Frequent uses

  • Furniture: Ovangkol is often used in the manufacture of high-quality furniture such as tables, chairs, shelves and cabinets. Its attractive grain and stability make it an ideal material for fine pieces of furniture, especially designer and bespoke furniture.
  • Interior design: It is used in interior design for wall cladding, flooring, ceiling cladding and stairs. Ovangkol’s visual impact and durability make it an excellent material for exclusive interiors.
  • Veneers & Inlays: Ovangkol is also often used as a veneer as it offers an attractive surface with a deep color and a striking grain. In inlay work, it adds special visual elements.
  • Musical instruments: Due to its acoustic properties, the wood is also used in the construction of musical instruments such as guitars, drumheads and pianos. It contributes to a balanced sound and is stable enough to meet the high demands of instrument making.
  • Handicrafts & woodturning: Ovangkol is often used for arts and crafts, sculpture and high quality woodturning where its striking grain and workable texture are important.
