• Heartwood: Intense red to coral red or orange when freshly cut, later darkening to deep red to dark brown-violet.
• Sapwood: Pale yellowish to light gray, clearly set off from the heartwood.
• Grain: Mostly straight, occasionally alternating with a lively, high-contrast structure; sometimes with shiny light reflections.

• Hardness: Janka hardness: ~ 7,650 N harder than oak, but easier to work than amaranth.
