Origin: America

Red Heart | Chakte kok

Red Heart, also known as Chakte Kok, is a hard, tropical wood that originates mainly from Central America and southern Mexico. It belongs to the Papilionaceae family and is known for its striking reddish to purplish-brown coloring and high density. Very sensitive to cracking.

Color & grain

  • Heartwood: Strong red to pinkish red, occasionally with purple or orange shades; usually darkens to a warm reddish brown or rosé tone.

  • Sapwood: Pale yellow to almost whitish, clearly set off from the heartwood.

  • Grain: Mostly straight to slightly irregular; fine, dense texture with a natural sheen.

Note: The color can fade quickly when exposed to light. Transparent UV protective varnishes or oils help to maintain the luminosity for longer.

Tree size & wood properties

  • Average height: 15-24 m
  • trunk diameter: 30-60 cm
  • Hardness: Janka hardness approx. 5,400N comparable to walnut, quite hard and robust.
  • Weight: Density approx. 750-880 kg/m³ in air-dried condition.
  • Durability: Moderate to good resistance to fungi and insects

Frequent uses

  • Furniture construction: Especially as an accent wood in designer furniture, inlays or fronts – the strong color creates strong contrasts.
  • Interior fittings: wall panels, decorative strips or smaller elements with an exclusive color effect.
  • Musical instruments: guitar components (bindings, fingerboards), decorative elements – occasionally used due to their resonance properties.
  • Woodturning & art objects: Popular for turned bowls, knife handles, pens, jewelry – polishable to high smoothness and brilliance.
  • Small furniture & luxury items: Caskets, writing instruments, game boards – the extraordinary color makes each piece unique
