Santos rosewood | Pau Ferro

Santos rosewood, also known as Bolivian rosewood or pau ferro, comes mainly from South America (especially Bolivia and Brazil) and is a popular alternative to East Indian rosewood. It belongs to the legume family and impresses with its high density, striking color contrasts and excellent acoustic and mechanical properties.

Despite its name, Santos rosewood is botanically not a true rosewood (Dalbergia spp.), but has comparable properties.

Color & grain

  • Heartwood: Medium to dark brown, often streaked with purple, black or reddish brown; very decorative and rich in contrast.

  • Sapwood: Light gray to yellowish, clearly set off from the heartwood.

  • Grain: Alternating, partly wavy or irregular; very expressive with a natural sheen and deep color effect.

  • Woodturning & handicrafts: knife handles, writing utensils, bowls can be finely worked and excellently polished.
