Color & grain

• Heartwood: Warm golden-brown to reddish-brown, often with subtle, darker veins. Over time, the wood becomes more intense in color, which makes it even more attractive.
• Sapwood: Very light, almost white to pale yellow, which provides a nice contrast to the darker heartwood.
• Grain: Mostly straight, but occasionally wavy or with characteristic patterns such as bird’s eye grain or flickering structure. These grains make the wood particularly decorative and unique.

Tree size & wood properties

• Average height: 5-12 meters (pear trees are relatively small and grow slowly).
• Trunk diameter: 20-60 cm depending on tree age and variety.
• Hardness: Janka hardness: ~ 6,400 N comparable to maple, but somewhat more flexible and easier to machine.
• Weight: Average density, approx. 650-750 kg/m³ in the dried state.
• Durability: Moderately resistant to moisture and insect infestation, therefore preferred for indoor use. Pear wood should be well protected and sealed for outdoor applications.

Frequent uses

• Furniture: Pear wood is particularly suitable for high-quality pieces of furniture such as tables, cabinets and chairs. The fine grain and warm coloring make it a preferred choice for classic furniture.
• Kitchen utensils & chopping boards: Due to its dense, fine structure, pear wood is also popular for chopping boards, cooking utensils and other kitchen items.
• Handicrafts & woodturning: Often used in the production of small art objects, bowls and decorative items, as the pear wood can be worked and polished well.
• Musical instruments: Especially for the construction of fingerboards, piano keys and other small musical instruments, as it offers a good combination of strength and flexibility.
